im hoping we can rally our, ahem, knowledge, to help a brudda out. Ive been doing some research on s15s and the different specs they were released with etc. Apparently the spec r gt released here has the same power output as the spec s... 147kw where as the jap and NZ delivered models were over 180kw... IF this is true i will be importing a 99 jdm version, but i wanted to make sure that this beast has all the goodies:
480cc injectors?? helical mechanical gtr diff?? bb turbo for sure?? theres so may opinions i dont know what to believe.

from my knowledge, the australian has 147kw... spec r has no kit/spoiler or the sunroof but the spec s does. i'm also leading to believe that all s15s come with bb t28?

Ok from my memory/knowledge/shizzle i know. Oz spec is 147kw however some people say that is underquoted. I believe the only difference between oz and jap spec is either boost pressure or ECU tune. Mechanically they are identical.
Spec S and Spec R in oz are trim levels, in jap/nz they indicate turbo and non turbo.
Almost no oz S15 came with a bb turbo, although it's fairly random even on jap cars. The non bb turbo is pretty well just as good (tested on the same car), don't worry about it to much. If you really want that 50rpm better spool then it's possible to visually tell a BB and non bb apart or read the tag on the core of the turbo.
Helical diff on manual, viscous on autos. However i do know of some manual cars coming with viscous as well, like the turbos i think this is just due to what they had in the parts bin at the time. Whatever it has in it chuck it out and put a 2 way in.
I think the autos were detuned and may have used smaller injectors as well.
Jap spec R has pillar pod stock and rear window wiper, oz spec has highmount taillight and no pillar pod.
Since you will be modding it anyways i don't think it'd really matter weather you got an oz or jap spec S15, oz spec would probably have a better service record to, but thats case by case. Just swap the 200sx badges for Silvia badges (inside even the 200sx has silvia on the dash and kickpanels, apparently cost to much to make a 200sx badged dash for oz).

i am actually hunting the extra power of the jdm spec cause i dont really want to put too many mods on it at this stage but still want a relatively fast car as my daily. I cant stress enough that this will not become my track car - at least not till i have a house and another car. Thus i want something i can comfortably cruise to sydney in but still have fun with. So minimal mods... ie fmic, arc super induction box, apexi ps revolution zorst, 15psi and some minor suspension work. Hence im after the version with helical diff also - unless i can find something with an aftermarket already in it

With those mods your oz and jap spec cars should make identical power. The hardware is the same after all. Ask this same question on silvia nsw for some more knowledgable replies but i suspect that buying an oz spec will do you just as well.

Just what i said, the jap S15 has a boost gauge in a pod on the pillar stock. It also has a rear wiper. The oz car has no rear wiper because thats where the brake light is.
