Just considering doing this conversion again, as the gas rebate is still around for a while and the injection kits are a bit cheaper... Ill run through what i know, so if anyone has anything ive missed, or the info ive got here is incorrect, please post.
And, if anyone knows of results from these newer injection conversions, please let me know so i can finally make a decision on this.
The plan will be to get a donut tank in the spare wheel well, and lift the false floor to another 5" or so to keep the space saver above it.
With the amount of driving and current prices I worked out we would get payback in less than a year (after the rebate).
The system comes with a fully tunable gas ECU to run the injectors and adjust timing, so tuning should be spot on for it. I've been told the injectors can support close to 200kw (ill be checking this), so if its true itll be a bit of an upgrade from the stock system.
Propane is also rated at around 130Ron, and is already injected as a gas so it doesnt need atomisation, and is injected very cold, so it has a cooling effect on the intake.
The cost is around 3500-4k (with a 2k rebate) for the injection system. A vortex mixer system is only around 2500 bucks or less, depending on the tank used. This means that non turbo owners can have a conversion for 500 bucks (after rebate)!
It just seems to get better.... 100% propane is meant to be like 130ron, so it handles high boost without detonation. A well setup gas system is supposed to be able to produce more power than an equivalent petrol setup.
Now the bad:
The ratio of use is about 1.5 times the gas for the equivalent amount of petrol... gas is at about 75c/L so it puts the equivalent price at about $1.10/L.
Gas price is also tipped to go up about 13% per year (from something i read a while ago, may not be true) till 2010/11 so the under $1 per liter is pretty much guaranteed till then (if thats right).
A lot of servos sell propane/butane mix (butane is cheaper), which lowers the octane rating badly... these mixes can be as low as 80ron, so if your setup is tuned for the higher octane gas, youll detonate, and in a turbo, probably blow the motor.
There are a lot of servos that sell 100% propane, so the trick is to get to know where to fill up...
Caltex at Ele has a 100% propane sign up, so theres the first one on the list.
Post thoughts!!!!
